Unfortunately, looking for a room in Karlsruhe is not that easy, so in addition to the numerous online accommodation portals, you should also make use of all local search options and, if necessary, extend your search to the surrounding regions. The KIT is easily accessible by public transport. Basically, the earlier the better! Don't wait until you receive your letter of admission. In many degree programs with restricted admission, you can estimate very well ahead of time whether you will get a place. Places in halls of residence

The largest provider of rooms in halls of residence is the Studierendenwerk. This is where you will find the cheapest accommodation. However, as everywhere in Germany, places are scarce. You can apply online from 04-01 for the winter semester and from 10-01 for the summer semester. It is not necessary for you to have already applied. So send your online application as soon as possible! You can also find halls of residence run by other organizations on the website, which you can apply to separately.

Private apartments and shared apartments

  • the Studierendenwerk offers a private accommodation service.
  • if you want a cheaper option, you can take a look at Wohnen für Hilfe. In a housing partnership, you help senior citizens or families and live at a reasonable price.
  • there are various real estate portals on the internet that will show you good options for apartments or shared apartments.

Newspaper advertisements

Of course, you should also search the local newspapers in Karlsruhe for housing offers or place an apartment ad there directly. The Badische Neueste Nachrichten and the Wochenblatt are suitable for this (in addition to the weekly newspaper for Karlsruhe, you can also view the weekly newspapers for the surrounding regions here).

Found an apartment? Register your residence!

You are required to report your new place of residence to the appropriate registration office. You can do this electronically if your previous place of residence was also in Germany. To do so, you’ll need

  • a federal user account (BundID)
  • an ID card with a PIN
  • the AusweisApp
  • an NFC-enabled smartphone

If you don’t have a BundID and/or an ID card with a PIN yet, you can apply for both through the City of Karlsruhe. Simply schedule an appointment at www.karlsruhe.de or call the government hotline at +49 721 - 115.

If you’re coming from abroad, you cannot use the online service. You must schedule an appointment with the city.
